Cardiovascular Physiology, 7th Edition Authors: BERNE, Robert M., MD DSc(Hon) (Univ of Virginia); LEVY, Matthew N., MD (Case Western Reserve Univ) Bibliographic Data: (ISBN: 0-8151-0901-6, Mosby-Year Book Inc, 1997, $35.95) 324 pages, soft cover. Audience 1: Medical Students Audience 2: Nursing and Allied Health Students Other Info: The book contains both black-and-white and color illustrations. DESCRIPTION: This is the seventh edition of a classic text of cardiovascular physiology. The material is presented in a very logical manner by focusing first on individual components and then leading to integrated control of the cardiovascular system. This edition has been significantly revised in many areas since the last version, published in 1992. PURPOSE: The authors indicate that the goal is to present general concepts and control mechanisms involved in regulation of the cardiovascular system. These worthy objectives are fulfilled completely with this edition. AUDIENCE: According to the authors, this book is designed primarily for medical and graduate students. I agree with this view and believe that anyone interested in cardiovascular physiology or pathophysiology would benefit from this text. These authors are well-recognized leaders in cardiovascular research and have proven their ability to clearly present fundamental concepts in this field. FEATURES: The illustrations are superb and enhance the text material. The references are current and the authors have included many areas where recent advances have been made in our understanding of cardiovascular physiology. The book is very attractive and well-designed. A helpful feature is the presentation of clinical examples within boxes in various chapters. This approach helps to illustrate the physiological concepts being discussed and will be of particular interest to many readers. ASSESSMENT: This edition is an outstanding text of cardiovascular physiology, and the authors have done a superb job in clearly presenting the important concepts in this area. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone interested in cardiovascular physiology or to those with the previous edition because this version contains a wealth of new information.
