The absorption and refractive index increments due to continuous distributions of resonances have been calculated for both Debye-type distributions and for distributions Gaussian in logarithmic frequency. Comparison of the results with the available experimental data shows that it is not possible to discriminate between the two types of distribution, but suggests that the damping constant of the individual resonances must be of the order of unity.
