The three‐dimensional problem of magnetopause merging has been analyzed using an extension of Alfvén's neutral‐sheet field annihilation model. That model has been generalized for an arbitrary magnitude and direction of the interplanetary magnetic field. The analysis provides a quantitative prediction of the merging rate that is consistent with the observed dependence of geomagnetic activity on the direction and magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field.
