Measurements of exhaled nitric oxide have been proposed as a tool to improve the control of asthma and inflammatory airways disease, including the patient's response to anti-inflammatory treatment and to predict loss of control and to monitor compliance with treatment. Several techniques have been used to assess exhaled nitric oxide gas and the majority of studies have used the chemiluminescence method. More recently, a new hand-held electrochemical sensor NIOX MINO(®) has been developed. Here, we will review the use of the NIOX MINO for the study of respiratory disorders.
