The coordination of safety and health matters opens a new and dynamic field of professional development for civil engineers, who in the past have worked as project designers, project managers, or project directors on behalf of their clients. The European Union directive 89/391/EEC 1 specifically mentions a “Coordinator for Safety and Health Matters” as a new job profile within the context of construction work. This person would be in charge of the coordination of all facets related to health and safety at the construction site. The time frame for this activity would be during the project phase as well as during the implementation phase of the construction. This article analyzes the development of this new professional context for civil engineers, the obstacles to overcome, and the opportunity for engineers to contribute to the improvement of safety conditions at construction sites.
