Fundamental properties of HF probe circuits are critically analysed (100 MHz-a few GHz). It is pointed out that badly defined circuits may respond partly to potential, partly to electric field fluctuations and thus give ambiguous results. Twin probes for electric field measurements can be used to overcome this difficulty.
