Key result
Anthracycline chemotherapy and mediastinal radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma resulted in progressive late-onset heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, and conduction disorders 20 years post-treatment in a 46-year-old woman.
Why the study?
Elaborated chemotherapy protocols for malignancies carry significant cardiotoxicity, highlighting the need for comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of common mitral valve disease and accurate etiology in late anthracycline- and radiation-related cardiomyopathy.
Case Report (n=1)
Highlights the need for comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to identify the etiology of late cardiomyopathy in patients with a history of anthracycline and radiation therapy.
Background. Elaborated chemotherapy protocols used for a broad spectrum of solid and haematological malignancies have a significant cardiotoxicity potential. Different biologic mechanisms generated by Doxorubicin used in ABVD protocol, induce irreversible myocardial alterations, like type I cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction. The present case-report highlights the importance of comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of a common mitral valve disease and emphasizes the importance of the accurate etiology in a case of late cardiomyopathy anthracycline + radiation related.

Jiga et al. (2020) conducted a case report in Late cardiotoxicity (heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy) post-Hodgkin lymphoma treatment (n=1). Anthracycline chemotherapy and mediastinal radiotherapy was evaluated on Development of late cardiotoxicity. Anthracycline chemotherapy and mediastinal radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma resulted in progressive late-onset heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, and conduction disorders 20 years post-treatment in a 46-year-old woman.
