If the white dwarf in a cataclysmic variable has a strong magnetic field, the inner region of the accretion disc is disrupted. We calculate the effect of this on the form of dwarf nova outbursts, in models for disc instabilities and in models for mass-transfer instability. We find that disruption of the inner disc region leads to shorter outbursts, and, for disc instabilities starting near the inner disc edge, to much longer intervals between outbursts. For moderate mass-transfer rates, the disc instability is suppressed altogether. Our models indicate that recently observed variability in cataclysmic variables with a magnetized white dwarf may be associated with dwarf nova type outbursts.
