This article identifies for therapists potential problem areas in binuclear families, particularly around the time of a remarriage. Based on published literature and the authors' observations, the issues described focus on the courtship period, common expectations of family members, ambiguity and transition of roles, and permeability of boundaries. The development of the stepfamily is delineated. Examples from cases and guidelines for therapeutic intervention are included.
