Mortality and Costs Associated with Wearable Cardioverter-defibrillators after Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis of Medicare Claims Data

569 adult patients who underwent CIED-related procedures (initial implantation, revision, generator exchange, or reimplantation) at a single tertiary academic medical center between October 2010 and August 2014. Excluded patients receiving concomitant antibiotics for other conditions, undergoing CIED extraction alone, or lacking follow-up beyond 30 days.

Postprocedural antibiotics (most commonly cephalexin, typically for 3 to 5 days) in addition to standard preprocedural intravenous prophylactic antibiotics (cefazolin or vancomycin) and local antimicrobial instillation.

Standard preprocedural intravenous prophylactic antibiotics and local antimicrobial instillation only (no postprocedural antibiotics).

Incidence of CIED infection (defined as early postimplantation inflammation, uncomplicated or complicated generator pocket infection, lead infection, or CIED-associated native or prosthetic valve endocarditis).safety
