The analysis of the decision-making of a systematic sample of 83 protocols of psychiatric commitment interviews indicates that these decisions are related not to reported characteristics of committable mental illness but rather to characteristics of the responses of others. These findings suggest that an understanding of deviance requires a consideration of the critical part played by the societal reaction in the creation of deviance.
