Proper prophylaxis and treatment of VTE are essential to significantly reduce PE-related mortality.
Supports VTE prophylaxis to curb PE deaths; leaves open optimal strategies for specific populations.
In Brief Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT), nonfatal pulmonary embolism (PE), and fatal PE. Approximately 60,000 to 200,000 deaths occur each year from PE, with 56% occurring in patients who did not receive DVT prophylaxis. When properly treated, however, patients have a good chance of recovery, and the mortality rate drops significantly.
