This article interrogates deferral politics in Africa using V. Y. Mudimbe’s political thought as a cornerstone to unpack cumulative events that entangle the continent in such politics. It argues that Mudimbe’s work highlights the contradictions between colonialism and independence and employs his literature to expose the sources and perpetuation of deferral politics in Africa. Drawing on Mudimbe’s work, this article proposes strategies to decolonise deferral politics to accelerate Africa’s developmental agenda.
