Does plasma noradrenaline concentration differ between women with pregnancy-associated hypertension and normotensive controls?
Does plasma noradrenaline concentration differ between women with pregnancy-associated hypertension and normotensive controls?
Plasma noradrenaline concentrations are not significantly altered in pregnancy-associated hypertension, suggesting the sympathetic nervous system does not play a primary etiologic role.
The possible role of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathogenesis of pregnancy associated hypertension has been the subject of conflicting reports. We have measured plasma noradrenaline concentration in 10 women with PAH and 8 normotensive controls both during and following pregnancy. No significant difference in noradrenaline concentration was found either between groups or within the hypertensive group when pregnancy and postpartum values were compared. We conclude that the sympathetic nervous system is not involved in the aetiology of PAH.
