An unusual field case of poorly-pigmented broilers was reported; investigation revealed the presence of trace amounts of aflatoxin in the feed. A laboratory experiment revealed that dietary aflatoxin at levels of 1.25 μg./g. or above lowered significantly (P < 0.05) the concentration of plasma carotenoids which are an accepted indicator of carcass pigmentation.
