Why the study?
Does antihypertensive treatment with indapamide SR and optional perindopril reduce stroke mortality and heart failure in patients > 80 years with sustained systolic BP > 160 mmHg?
Does antihypertensive treatment with indapamide SR and optional perindopril reduce stroke mortality and heart failure in patients > 80 years with sustained systolic BP > 160 mmHg?
Treatment of hypertension in the very elderly (>80 years) with indapamide SR and optional perindopril provides overwhelming benefit by significantly reducing stroke mortality and heart failure.
May support indapamide SR in very elderly hypertensives; leaves open prospective RCT confirmation.
prematurely on the basis of overwhelming benefit in the treatment arm. Treatment was associated with a 39% reduction in stroke mortality rate (p=0.05) and a 64% reduction in heart failure (p 80 years with a sustained systolic BP > 160 mmHg to the diuretic indapamide slow release (SR) 1.5 mg or matching placebo. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor perindopril (2–4 mg), or matching placebo, were added as necessary to achieve a target blood pressure of 150/80 mmHg.
