A quantitative investigation has been made of the factors affecting the concentration of mercury 6 3 P 0 atoms formed by collisions of the second kind between mercury 6 3 P 1 atoms and nitrogen. The absorption of 4047 Å (6 3 P 0 − 7 3 S 1 ) and the emission of 2656 Å (6 3 P 0 − 6 1 S 0 ) were studied in the pressure range 0.06 mm to 140 mm. Both types of measurement indicate that the forbidden line arises from spontaneous as well as collision-induced emission. The lifetime for spontaneous emission is estimated to be 4.2 × 10 −4 sec.
