In this review, we highlight the recent research efforts towards understanding the defect chemistry of titanium dioxide. Particular attention is paid to the synthesis of self-modified TiO ₂ materials with Ti ³⁺ /oxygen vacancies and the favorable effects of these defects on the properties and applications of the obtained materials.
