HRV may aid assessment of stress-related eating; leaves open its role in guiding obesity interventions.
Knowledge of the factors influencing dietary intake is crucial to understanding energy balance and obesity. There is a positive association between stress and obesity. One of the challenges underlying education is food choice in stressful environments. Thus, new tools are needed to understand eating behavior in diverse contexts. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – a measure of fluctuations from one heart rate to another – can provide valuable information about the general state of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the body’s reactions to stress, relaxation and eating. These measurements could play a significant role in modulating diet, especially in the context of eating disorders (EDs) and the relationship between food, stress and metabolic health.
