One factor which may limit the sterilization of some tumours by radiotherapy is the presence of hypoxic cells which are resistant to treatment with X rays. Techniques to overcome this problem include the use of high pressure oxygen, high LET radiations such as fast neutrons, and hypoxic cell sensitizers. There are reports that each of these methods is more effective than X rays alone (Henk and Smith, 1977; Catterall, 1977; Urtasun et al., 1977).
