A crossed electron and ion beam method has been used to measure the cross section for ionization of N + to N 2+ by electrons with energies in the range 20 to 500 eV. The cross section rises from the threshold to a maximum value of 5.0 × 10 -17 cm 2 at an electron energy of 125 eV. The errors in the measured cross section are uncertain because of an apparent cross section below threshold attributed to the electron impact dissociation of N 2 2+ .
