In 1992, the success of French Pilot Experiment Ocean Floor Observatory (OFM/SISMOBS) showed that a permanent broadband seismic and geophysical observatory could be installed on the seafloor. Coverage of the oceans by broadband three‐component digital seismic stations will improve our knowledge of seismic sources and the dynamics of the Earth's interior, but such coverage requires both international and interdisciplinary cooperation.
