The changes in stable isotope composition of inland sabkhas can throw light on the hydrologic mechanisms which operate in these systems. Inflow waters were found to be of meteoric origin. Immediately after local rain, water drains from surrounding sand dunes onto the top of the salt crust, dissolving it. Further inflow of waters keeps the sabkhas inundated for weeks, but the different sabkhas were found to be open to varying degrees to the inflow of groundwaters and to outflow of brines into bottom sediments.
