The purpose of this note is to speculate on whether quantum mechanical effects may be invoked in the understanding of established phenomena occurring in polymeric systems. What is here meant by quantum mechanical is the orbital overlap and resultant electron delocalization associated with monomeric organic systems [l, 21. Thus, this note attempts to indicate that several phenomena reported in the literature may be reinterpreted in terms of orbital overlap and its effect.
