Fatal brain abscesses caused by Zygomycetes occurred in two patients known to be parenteral drug abusers. An immunodiffusion test for detection of antibodies to Zygomycetes demonstrated a band of identity in the serum of both patients. Prompt brain biopsy and culture, along with serological testing, may lead to a more rapid diagnosis and treatment of this fungal infection. (JAMA1982;248:2881-2882)
