Taxonomic analysis reveals Laccaria pakistanica as a distinct macrofungal species in Pakistan, expanding known regional biodiversity within the Hydnangiaceae family.
Laccaria pakistanica is proposed as a new species from the Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. Morphological data and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (nrITS) and nuclear Large subunit (nLSU) sequences support its recognition as a new species. Laccaria pakistanica is characterised by subumbilicate to umbilicate and dark brown to pale yellowish-pink pileus, dark reddish-brown lamellae and lamellulae, cylindrical and longitudinally striated stipe that is concolorous to pileus, globose basidiospores (on average 7.02 × 6.86 μm), narrowly clavate to clavate hymenial cystidia, and a cutis pileipellis and stipitipellis. A description, illustrations, phylogenetic analyses, and comparison of the new species with closely related taxa are provided. A comprehensive table highlighting the distinguishing features of Asian Laccaria species and an artifical key for the Pakistani Laccaria species are also provided.
