The bipyridine derivative 1 is a very promising catalyst. It was obtained by asymmetric syn-thesis, is optically active, and accelerates the addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. This re-action affords good yields of product and proceeds with high asymmetric induction (up to 97% ee).
