In this perspective article, the authors discuss their experience of nurturing Black Joy by teaching at an HBCU during the current climate of anti-DEI. The authors began by sharing how they were inspired to attend an HBCU and these early experiences helped to shape their current approaches as HBCU faculty. Teaching at an HBCU in the age of anti-DEI is both an act of resistance and the promotion of Black Joy. While several predominately white institutions are banning diversity, equity, and inclusion offices, HBCUs continue to provide a safe haven for Black students that celebrate their cultural history, resilience, and identity. As HBCU faculty, it is our responsibility to empower our students to thrive, innovate, and lead. Carrying their cultural histories as badges of honor to create a more equitable and just world.
