Key result
Among adults with a BMI <23 kg/m2, a resting heart rate ≥76 beats/min was associated with a significantly higher risk of metabolic syndrome compared to <76 beats/min (OR 7.08; 95% CI 1.60-31.36).
Why the study?
Is higher resting heart rate associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults?
Cross-Sectional (n=856)
No
Is higher resting heart rate associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults?
Odds Ratio: 7.08 (95% CI 1.6–31.36)
Higher resting heart rate is significantly associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, particularly in non-obese Korean adults.
Does not support incorporating resting heart rate into metabolic syndrome screening yet; leaves open prospective validation in non-obese adults.
Lee et al. (2013) conducted a cross-sectional in Metabolic syndrome (n=856). High resting heart rate (≥76 beats/min) vs. Low resting heart rate (<76 beats/min) was evaluated on Risk of metabolic syndrome (OR 7.08, 95% CI 1.60-31.36). Among adults with a BMI <23 kg/m2, a resting heart rate ≥76 beats/min was associated with a significantly higher risk of metabolic syndrome compared to <76 beats/min (OR 7.08; 95% CI 1.60-31.36).
