It is proposed that the temperature of mesomorphic-isotropic phase changes and of transitions between mesophases may be markedly shifted by manageable electric fields. First experiments demonstrating such a shift in the nematic-isotropic transition of p-ethoxybenzylidene-p^'-aminobenzonitrile are reported.
