Population
45 young male volunteers (age 18-35 years), non-smokers, no current medication. Divided into 4 groups: 8 with hypertension grade I and BMI <25 kg/m2 (HT), 10 with hypertension grade I and BMI >=30 kg/m2 (HT OB), 14 healthy controls with BMI >=30 kg/m2 (OB), and 13 healthy controls with BMI <25 kg/m2 (C).

Cardiovascular (blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability) and sympathetic (plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline) responses to mental stresssurrogate

Early-stage hypertension is associated with higher sympathoadrenal activity, while obesity modifies the cardiovascular response to mental stress but does not have an additive effect on sympathetic activity in hypertensive patients.

Limitations

  • Measurement of plasma catecholamines in venous and not in arterial blood
  • Small number of patients
