44,061 patients who underwent a bariatric surgical procedure in Sweden (37,811 in the study group from 2010-2014 and 6,250 in the validation group from 2015) identified from the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry (SOReg).

Outcome

Severe postoperative complication occurring within the first 30 days after surgery (defined as Clavien-Dindo grade IIIb-V, requiring intervention under general anaesthesia, or resulting in organ failure or death)safety

A risk prediction model based on preoperative factors for severe complications after bariatric surgery demonstrated high specificity but insufficient sensitivity for individual patient assessment.

Limitations

HbA1c did not fit in the risk prediction model, possibly because diabetic and non-diabetic patients were grouped together
