Qualitative and historical study uncovers drivers of youth attrition in a church district, suggesting relational discipleship and holistic support mitigate disengagement.
The drop-out rate of youth from faith and church in the last decade, who were originally born and raised in Christian homes, has reached a critical point. Christ Apostolic Church is not left out in this situation as she has lost many of her young adults to other sister denominations. This paper adopted historical and empirical methods; interviews were used to facilitate adequate information on the views of youths, pastors and youth executives to determine the challenges and the solutions to the menace forcing the youths out of Christ Apostolic Church Oke – Itura District. It sees relationship, strict enforcement of church rules on some doctrinal issues, entitlement mindset, vocation and sexual immorality as some of the problems facing the youths and thereafter forcing them out of the Church. During the first century, Apostle Paul undoubtedly understood the concept relational mentorship. This paper therefore identified the great principles of Pauline concept of discipleship, including love, relationship, fathering, and mentorship. Leaders of the Church must innovatively adopt and incorporate the basic principles of the Pauline model of discipleship to end or at least minimize the current youth drop-out rate as submitted in this paper. The church authority should in all their capacity cater for the youths in some neglected aspects such as finances, emotional and physical need. It is paramount to say that the spiritual aspect which is always put in place by the church shouldn’t just end there but then extend to other various aspects.
