The purpose of this paper is to outline some of the problems encountered and the strategies evolved to deal with them in four studies of the elderly in Manitoba, Canada. All these studies used personal interviews for data collection. Ethical concerns are discussed with specific reference to consent, the obligations of the researcher to the respondent, and the demands of the respondent on the researcher. The most important aspect of the discussion is an emphasis on the recognition of the heterogeneity of the elderly population and its effect on the research process.
