THE ARTERIAL supply of the hippocampus has attracted attention ever since Uchimura's 23 work in 1928. He set out to prove that the different sensitivity to anoxia of the Sommer 21 sector (roughly equivalent to Rose's 17 sector h 1 ), the resistant band of Spielmeyer (Rose's sector h 2 ), and the end plate (Rose's sectors h 3 , h 4 , h 5 ) of the pyramidal cell layer of the hippocampus was due to differences in arterial supply. The selective loss of neurones and resultant gliosis in cases of long-standing epilepsy could so be accounted for. Especially with these views in mind, human material was examined by Altschul, 1 Heiman, 9 and Van den Bergh. 4 Lorente de No 12 examined cats, Scharrer 19 the opossum, and Nilges 15 the opossum, guinea-pig, rabbit, cat, and one Macaca mulatta . Heiman 9 discovered that the primary branches supplying the hippocampus from the posterior
