Sound absorption measurements have been made in oxygen-helium, oxygen-hydrogen and oxygen-deuterium mixtures to investigate the effect of light impurities on the collisional de-excitation of vibrationally excited oxygen molecules. The results are compared with the theory of Herzfeld and Litovitz and it is found that the calculations overestimate the efficiency of the impurity in all cases. Possible reasons for the discrepancies are discussed.
