A resonator tube method has been developed for the measurement of sound velocity and absorption at frequency/pressure ratios in the range 16 to 3000 (c/s) atm -1 . Measurements in argon and nitrogen at 30 °C give values of 324.1 m sec -1 and 354.8 m sec -1 respectively for the velocity of sound at 1 atm pressure. The results obtained in oxygen show a velocity dispersion and a peak in sound absorption due to a relaxation of the vibrational specific heat with a relaxation time of 15.9 ±2.4 msec at 1 atm pressure.
