Why the study?
With increasing numbers of patients with cardiac pacemakers presenting for physiotherapy and spa hospital treatment, knowledge regarding safe physical management needed to be popularized among physicians and physiotherapists.
Can physical therapy procedures be safely performed in patients with an implanted cardiac pacemaker?
Can physical therapy procedures be safely performed in patients with an implanted cardiac pacemaker?
Physical therapy is generally safe for patients with implanted pacemakers when appropriate safety principles are adhered to.
May support physical therapy in pacemaker patients with precautions; leaves open need for prospective trials to confirm safety.
In recent years, the number of implanted pacemakers has been increasing. The number of patients with cardiac pacemakers reporting to physiotherapy departments and referred for further treatment at spa hospitals has been increasing. There is an urgent need for popularising knowledge about this issue among physicians and physiotherapists. The paper presents examples of individual pacing modes and describes possible use of physiotherapy in the patients. Most physical therapy procedures may be performed in patients with a pacemaker, but on condition that appropriate safety principles are followed.
