An investigation of the direction of blood flow in the long portal vessels of the rhesus pituitary stalk was carried out using a specifically designed Doppler probe. Blood flow in the resting state was found to be from the hypothalamus toward the pituitary. With a Valsalva maneuver, the flow dropped to zero, but it returned to the base line value when the Valsalva maneuver was released, thus suggesting that changes in venous pressure may influence the blood flow in the hypothala-mohypophyseal portal system. These experiments illustrate the potential of this new technology for studying blood flow in small vessels. (Neurosurgery 12:492-495, 1983)
