Formulation study demonstrates optimal physical stability and prolonged dissolution of polyherbal candy, indicating an effective patient-friendly option for managing cough and throat irritation.
AbstractThe present study aimed to formulate and evaluate a polyherbal cough candy using selectedmedicinal herbs for effective management of cough and throat irritation. Herbal ingredientssuch as liquorice, ginger, tulsi, and clove were selected based on their traditional use, safety, and pharmacological activities including antitussive, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, andsoothing effects. The herbal extracts were prepared and incorporated into a candy base usingsugar, liquid glucose, honey, and suitable excipients. Preformulation studies includingorganoleptic evaluation, solubility, pH, and flow properties were performed to ensurecompatibility and stability. The prepared herbal cough candies were evaluated for physical characteristics, hardness, moisture content, dissolution time, content uniformity, microbial load, and stability. Theresults showed acceptable appearance, uniform weight, adequate hardness, low moisturecontent, and prolonged dissolution time indicating sustained soothing action. Among allformulations, batch F3 showed optimal performance and stability. The study concluded that herbal cough candy is a safe, effective, and patient-friendly dosageform with improved compliance and prolonged therapeutic action for cough management.
