Thematic review explores English acquisition barriers in hearing-impaired learners under NEP 2020, highlighting the need for inclusive pedagogy, assistive technology, and visual resources.
Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction and educational development. For children with hearing impairment, communication plays a crucial role in language acquisition, social participation, academic achievement, and personal development. In the contemporary educational context, English has emerged as an important medium of communication and learning across educational institutions, professional sectors, and global platforms. However, children with hearing impairment often face challenges in acquiring English language skills because traditional teaching methods are largely based on auditory learning and verbal communication. The present thematic article explores the significance of English as a medium of communication for children with hearing impairment within the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The article discusses communication barriers, inclusive educational practices, the role of assistive technologies, teacher preparedness, and policy perspectives related to English language learning among children with hearing impairment. It further highlights the importance of inclusive pedagogy, sign language support, visual learning resources, and accessible educational environments in promoting effective communication skills. The article emphasizes that inclusive and equitable educational opportunities can help children with hearing impairment develop confidence, academic competence, and social participation. The discussion contributes to the broader discourse on inclusive education and language learning in India.
