Tungsten carbide nano-needles have been synthesized on a tungsten tip by catalytic chemical vapour deposition using benzene as a starting material and nickel as a catalyst. The size of the needles is typically about in length and 50 nm in diameter. The scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images observed using the needles have demonstrated their advantages as STM tips in terms of the resolution and stability in air.
