We propose an alternative way of calculating the resonances of the Stark effect in hydrogen. The method is based on a rational approximation of the logarithmic derivative of the eigenfunction, and leads to a quantization condition for the complex energies of the metastable states. We present accurate results for the ground and some excited states for several field intensities. {} 1996 The American Physical Society.
