Literature review uncovers key barriers to implementing green remediation in Africa, highlighting the need for clear policies and sustainable financing.
The world is battling pollution issues that are exacerbated by increasing industrialization and population growth. With the current aims of sustainable development, green remediation (GR) is advocated as an approach to minimize the environmental footprint during hazardous site remediation. Of course, GR comes with its challenges but offers a reliable mode of environmental cleanup by ensuring that environmental protection is achieved during remediation projects while also promoting green concepts. Africa is a fast‐growing continent with several developmental issues that could pose a challenge during the implementation of GR. This paper, through a thorough literature search and analysis, aims to elucidate the concept of GR, its implementation, challenges, and opportunities in Africa. The research deduced that challenges such as financing, lack of skillsets and technology, and lack of guidelines and policies hinder the application of GR in Africa. This study recommends the use of awareness as a tool to introduce GR and provides guidelines on ways through which GR can be incorporated into environmental remediation projects in Africa.
