This study describes the results of 23 Ah Ni/Zn cells with zinc electrodes containing Ca ( OH ) 2 and nonsintered nickel oxide electrodes. Calcium hydroxide containing zinc electrodes tested in 20 w / o KOH show less shape change and zinc dendrites, are less soluble in KOH , and have a higher capacity retention and cycle life than comparable zinc electrodes in cells with higher KOH concentrations. This improvement in performance is attributed to the formation of calcium zincate ( Ca ( OH ) 2 · 2 Zn ( OH ) 2 · 2 H 2 O ) in the electrode structure. Formation of calcium zincate is shown to be KOH concentration dependent.
