We reviewed 387 cases of patients discharged for acute myocardial infarction at a public general hospital from November 1985 to March 1988 that were coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, Clinically Modified, Ninth Revision (ICD-9-CM) (2). We found that 219 (57%) patients did not have an acute myocardial infarction during that period of hospitalization. We found, as did Iezzoni and colleagues, that the commonest cause of these 219 coding errors was the miscoding of a "ruled-out" myocardial infarction as an acute myocardial infarction...References1.
