A multicenter study analyzes the use of elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) in 142 fractures of the femoral, tibia, and humerus shaft in children. Flexible rods are introduced through the distal metaphyseal area to develop a bridging callus. Early load on the limb is possible and is recommended. Complications were minimal. Compared with osteosynthesis with extracortical plates in 208 patients, ESIN obviates the need for prolonged bed rest and protects soft tissue without disrupting the blood supply to bone tissue.
