A significant uptake of supercritical mobile phases into immobilized stationary phases has been observed. The phase swelling effect has been evaluated hydrodynamically for SE‐30, SE‐54, and cyanopropyl silicone phases with respect to the mobile‐phase density of supercritical butane, column temperature, and the presence of a polar retention moderator. Some kinetic and retention consequences of the swelling phenomena are discussed.
