Icoholism among elderly persons #{149}s often unrecognized and madequately treated, diminishing the quality oflate life. Lack of adequate clinicat attention to alcohol consumption in this age group has several causes. Elderly persons often deny alcohol use, abuse, or dependency, and physicians and other health care providers do not ask the appropriate questions to uncover alcohol-related problems. Family members, caregivers, and friends may collude with elderly persons in denying such problems. Finally, few detoxification and rehabilitation programs address the age-specific issues of elderly persons.
