The article provides a religious and philosophical analysis of the phenomenon of journey, comprehended mainly in the context of the Islamic doctrine. It is noted about such important characteristics of a religiously motivated journey as its ambivalent nature; reciprocating nature, implying not a "leaving", but a "return" to the spiritual sources; "inclusion", full immersion in cult activities; the presence of elements of nomadic culture. It is also noted that some journey traditions in the Islamic culture, such as rihla (journey to gain new knowledge), have historical examples in other faiths, and are more of a general cultural practice, but in the Islamic culture this was also superimposed on religious grounds.Another example of a religiously motivated journey is ziyarats, which were associated with visiting the graves of famous and respected people who were engaged in educational and preaching activities during their lifetime.
